Environmentalist Approach in Products and Production

With the awareness of “Sustainable Life” responsibility, ARÇELİK A.Ş. targets to render the protection of environment and natural resources sustainable throughout the "product life cycle" via its environment-friendly activities and products.

Thanks to its new vision, “Respects the Globe, Respected Globally", ARÇELİK A.Ş integrates its "sustainability" approach to its main business operations. Main business goals determined in line with its new vision represent three aspects of sustainability in economic, environmental and social dimensions.

Targeting “to take part in solution” within the framework of sustainability approach, ARÇELİK A.Ş. maintains its efforts oriented towards climate change and protection of restricted natural resources.

In ARÇELİK A.Ş that aims reducing environmental impact throughout all the stages of manufacture, production processes are highly energy-efficient and consume less of natural resources.

To leave a clean and healthy environment to the next generations, ARÇELİK A.Ş regularly monitors its own environmental performance by determining environmental aims and objectives to control environmental impacts and limit resource utilization.

ARÇELİK A.Ş's environment-friendly approach has been achieved as a result of constant control on environmental impacts throughout “the product’s life cycle”, the technological superiority that the company has attained and the management systems that it has implemented. ARÇELİK A.Ş implements ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) integrated with ISO 9001 Quality Management System (QMS).

ARÇELİK A.Ş initially received BS 7750 Environmental Management Systems Standard in 1994 for its Dishwasher Plant just two years after it was introduced as the first Environmental Management Standard of the world. Afterwards, upon BS 7750 Standard’s recognition as ISO 14001 in 1996, ARÇELİK A.Ş has started to apply ISO 14001 Standard of Environmental Management Systems.

The efficiency and continuity of management systems are assured by Internal System Audits carried out regularly as well as the inspections by independent organizations.

•    REACH – Regulation of the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals.

WEEE - Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment

In February 2003, European Commission issued WEEE Directive 2002/96/EC regulating the disposal, recycling, recovery and reutilization of the products launched by electrical and electronic equipment manufacturers.
To comply with WEEE Directive in EU member countries, ARÇELİK A.Ş. fulfills its legal liabilities via the mechanisms of collection and recycling. ARÇELİK A.Ş. is the member of many collection systems that collect and dispose the goods at the end of their service life. ARÇELİK A.Ş. encourages compliance with the WEE Directive in the non-EU markets.

RoHS - Directive on the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment

Put into force for European Union countries in 2006, RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC restricts the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.

Performing necessary tests within the company and at accredited laboratories, ARÇELİK A.Ş. has achieved full compliance even before the effective date of Directive by establishing the Compliance Management System to ensure that the suppliers are in full compliance with the Directive.

EuP - Directive on Ecodesign Requirements for Energy-Using (Related) Products

Energy-Using Products (EuP) Directive by European Commission aims to improve energy and environmental performance of the products throughout their entire “lifecycle” by systematically integrating environmental characteristics even from the initial stages of design. ARÇELİK A.Ş. manufactures its products in compliance with the EU Directive.

REACH - Regulation of the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals

One of the most extensive legal regulations of EU and effective since 2007, REACH Regulation regarding the management of chemicals sets targets through all the stages of production and distribution chain from producers of raw materials to the retailers.

ARÇELİK A.Ş. adopts and supports REACH Regulation as one of the most important legal procedures to protect environment and human health as the Regulation aims to register and control all chemical substances used in the production; to monitor their chemical safety data by registering from the manufacturer to the industries as well as communicating the related data to the consumers.

At ARÇELİK A.Ş, REACH implementations are carried out by Energy and Environmental Management composed of an expert team.  All required preparations are being coordinated by this unit; maintaining constant communication with the suppliers, this unit ensures to develop a perfectionist process in compliance with REACH Regulation.

To ensure the protection of environment and human health, ARÇELİK A.Ş. has established lots of procedures based on legal regulations and Environmental Policy and has been manufacturing its products in full compliance with these procedures. As another example, ARÇELİK A.Ş. has become the first white goods manufacturer in Turkey that do not use CFC gases for refrigerators in 1995, much earlier than 2006, which is the deadline foreseen for Turkey’s transition within the framework of Montreal Protocol.

Less energy consuming technology

ARÇELİK A.Ş handles the issue of controlling environmental impact during products’ life cycles as a process starting from design stage. For this purpose, ARÇELİK A.Ş’s R&D and industrial design teams focus on product designs, technological studies, product development and improvement. These works result in high energy-efficient product series reflecting environmental-friendly product identity.

For instance, upgrading ARÇELİK A.Ş’s refrigerators from A class to A+ class ensures approximately 20% less energy consumption while A++ class provides about 43% energy saving. And it offers approximately 60% energy saving when upgraded from A class to A+++, firstly recognized in EU energy labeling regulation that has come into effect at the end of 2010.

Arçelik has led the way once more thanks to its energy efficiency approach, setting an example for the world, with its new energy label A+++ class Refrigerator and Dishwasher as well as its Washing Machine, which is more efficient than A+++.

Having carried out many energy improvement projects for refrigerator compressors, electrical engines, cooking appliances, TVs and tumble dryers in 2010, Arçelik A.Ş has increased the manufacturing volume of energy efficient products as a result of its sensitive approach.

Adopting a management understanding that protects and maintains natural resources with the approach of total quality, ARÇELİK A.Ş aims developing products that comply with the standards of not only today, but also future, and offering these products to the consumers.

Less resource-consuming technology

EC Directive sets recovery target as 80% for the large electrical and electronic household appliances. And thanks to the improvement of raw materials and goods, ARÇELİK A.Ş. achieves a recycling ratio between 83.9% and 98% depending on the type of white goods.

Product development focuses on using less resource with the purpose of contributing to solve the issues such as “global warming”, “decline in natural resources” and “water shortage” that threaten the world.
Launched in 2010, the world’s least water consuming 13-place dishwasher "New Ecologist" is one of the best examples of ARÇELİK A.Ş’s environmentalist approach and technology developed for minimizing the usage of natural resources.

Saving 39 tons of water a year compared to hand wash and being the world’s least water consuming dishwasher, "New Ecologist" consumes only 6 L water. Offering the cleanest and brightest dishes in the most economic way, it also contributes protection of environment by decreasing the water consumption.

Thanks to 2010 projects carried out for the ovens, packaging materials of our products have been improved to provide savings. Reducing use of wood by 85 % and use of cardboard by 60%, we have saved approximately 1650 trees from being cut.

Instead of cardboard and wooden packaging materials utilized for domestic and abroad shipping of compressors, we started a new reusable packaging system in 2010 that returns to the plant after shipment and used again and again. With this new design compared to old type of packaging, the utilization of materials such as wood, cardboard, metal brackets, polyfoam plates, nails, nylon film and polyester ribbon-buckle has been totally removed.

In 2010, water consumption of standard cotton program has been reduced by 2 liters after the studies on Mini LCD 7-8-9 kg washing machines. And this means approximately 400 L of saving per household estimating 200 cycles of usage in a year.

Approximately 50% paper saving was achieved in 2010 by reducing the number of pages used for TV warranty certificates and additional documents with a change of design.
